Krista Parrish: Listen
Firefly (2010 version)
I wrote this song in 2003...it was new years eve and I was supposed to be in NYC/Times Square with friends celebrating but unfortunately we had just gotten a puppy (I was living with my mom & brother at the time) who ended up being ill and had to be taken somewhere, don't worry, she made it but I did not make it to NYC. I'm glad I didn't b/c this song would not exist. I was on the phone with my friend Tim who was in NY and gracious enough to hang out on the phone with me since I was alone with my guitar. It soon became a favorite among fans and friends, especially my brother Corey who ended up writing a 2nd guitar part to it which was awesome. We always performed it together. I never really had anyone in mind that this song represented but as I sing it these days, I think of Corey and he definitely shined the brightest in my life. I was inspired to re-record this recently (summer of 2010)...it was on my 2004 album, "Taking Chances". I didn't have a recording of my brother's part so I made one up that I felt was similar to what I remember him playing. I'm very happy with the way it turned out and I hope to start playing this song out with my new band and maybe it will even make it to our follow up record! I did edit this song to make it more "radio friendly" for the future...the lines that I took out really sound like I'm singing to Corey:
Firefly, you tend not to lie
Tell me, what's behind your light?
Take a rest, I'll shine for you, I'll try my best*
Firefly, you fly beneath deep blue red
Firefly you fly all around
Firefly you fly lighting up this town
A voice behind says girl "turn your frown upside down"
Firefly you fly without any sound
*Afraid to shine, afraid to shine, well, you shine and you're all mine
You and I have been here once before
Two hearts that cannot be ignored
firefly you fly up and down down down down down down down
firefly you fly lighting up my sky
*Afraid to shine, afraid to shine, well, you shine and you're all mine
